Season five drivers commit

Season Five of Sports Prototype Cup will begin at Barcelona's F1 Grand Prix circuit on March 11/12. It's a mere three months since the 2022 season ended with a dramatic Portimao finale, and around eighteen cars are expected to line up for the new season opener.

Significantly, several former race winners will return to the Cup. The Portimao event was won by former Radical Champion and Evo magazine track tester, Roger Green, who mastered the supercharged Revolution 500SC on a circuit that he now instructs at. Roger returns for a full season and aims to be a contender for overall honours.

Sir Chris Hoy has committed to the full season, with the exception of Silverstone. The Olympian is a former Cup race winner and brings considerable prototype racing experience, having raced in the 24 hours of Le Mans and won in the European Le Mans Series. He will also race in the Revolution trophy class.

Richard Morris was a double race winner in his debut Sports Prototype Cup season, building on previous success in Sports 1000 and Praga racing. Proudly waving the Racing Pride flag, Richard will also do a full season in the Revolution trophy class, using his experience with the supercharged car from 2022.

The ten round season will also see Revolutions piloted by experienced drivers such as Nino La Rosa and Joachim Penteado, as well as top drivers from the North American and Korean Sports Prototype Cups. In an innovative collaboration, the Cup regulations and trademark is licensed to these territories in return for those Cups entering drivers in at least one European round.

Heading the Radical entry list are two extremely quick drivers. Jacek Zielonka competed in the Sports Prototype Cup's Italian Grand Prix support race in 2021, driving an SR3, but switches to the turbocharged SR10 for a full season assault on both the Radical Trophy and the overall Cup rankings. Jack Leese has a wealth of coaching experience in Radicals which will stand him in good stead to challenge in his SR3.  With the full-season driver lineup announcements from top teams such as SPV Racing and Valour Racing to follow soon, the Radical Trophy looks set to grow in 2023.

The 2023 calendar has ten rounds at five circuits, all of which are current or former Grand Prix venues.

Revised class structure with ‘Race within a Race’ format for leading prototype brands

The Cup will once again feature the following individually promoted classes at each round:

  • Revolution Trophy - for the Revolution 427 and 500SC

  • Radical Trophy - for any Radical model

  • Radical SR3 Trophy - for the ever-popular SR3*

  • Sports Prototype Open - for any other invited lightweight prototype. Teams and drivers representing brands such as Ligier, KTM, Praga and Funyo are welcome to apply. Branded classes can be created if five or more of the same car enter.

*Subject to five cars at each round, otherwise this will be merged into the Radical Trophy class.
